Zion Brown of Buford, Georgia grew up in a household that encouraged serving, volunteering and providing to others within his community. With his experience, Zion intends to take his passion for altruism with him into his career.
“My passion is helping people, and that was discovered right before my sophomore year of college where I began working with my church's youth group. This drove me to pursue a degree that would allow me to organize and use my leadership abilities to help others. The biggest challenge I have faced while pursuing this path has been narrowing down exactly where I want to help others and how I want to do so,” Zion said.
Zion intends to work in nonprofit organizations that focus primarily on service and assistance and wants to utilize the skills he has obtained through his business management degree to manage these organizations effectively and ethically. By utilizing the HOPE Scholarship and Tuition Equalization grant, Zion was able to afford his education.
“Being an award recipient of these two programs allowed me not to have to stress out about my future and attending college. These programs helped me save money which resulted in not having to take out excess loans so I could go to the school of my choosing, “said Zion.
His intended major is Business Management. The reason he chose the major was due to the flexibility it provides. “Due to my education at a prestigious liberal arts college, I am able to take classes not only in the management sphere, but I have the options to take marketing and business ethics classes. I love the variety that studying business management offers.”
Zion is also a young entrepreneur. “In college, I have had the opportunity to start my own photography business. This was birthed out of an on-campus job that required me to create design content and post to the college's social media. The business has been mildly successful and a huge accomplishment of mine,” said Zion.
Zion’s main hobbies include extracurricular's such as hiking, photography, watching movies, playing basketball, running his own business related to photography, intramural sports and an on-campus job working for the school Chaplain.
Zion cites his faith in God to be his ultimate inspiration along with his family members – his mother and sister. “He has put me in situations that has allowed me to discover my purpose. Also, my mother & sister are huge inspirations to me because of their hard work and sacrifice to make sure I had the best opportunities available,” Zion said.
When preparing for college, Zion advises starting the process early on in high school. “It makes the process of choosing a college as a senior much easier. Also, take advantage of dual enrollment and opportunities to take college classes. It will make the transition from high school to college easier,” said Zion.
