Basic Eligibility for Georgia Foster Care Scholarship
Basic Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for a Georgia Foster Care Scholarship award, students must:
- Meet U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen requirements;
- Be a legal resident of Georgia;
- Be enrolled in a Georgia public or private college, university or technical college as an undergraduate student seeking a college degree or technical certificate/diploma;
- Meet the Eligible Postsecondary Institution’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy;
- Be in compliance with Selective Service registration requirements;
- Be in compliance with the Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990, O.C.G.A. §20-1-20, et seq.;
- Not be in default or owe a refund on a student financial aid program.
Georgia Residency Requirement
Georgia residency, for purposes of the Georgia Foster Care Scholarship program, is determined by the eligible college or university. Documentation proving Georgia residency may be required by the college or university.
- For students attending an institution in the University System of Georgia, residency determination is based on USG Board of Regents policy.
- For students attending an institution in the Technical College System of Georgia, residency determination is based on TCSG State Board policy.
- For students attending eligible private institutions, residency determination is based on Georgia Residency Requirements at Private Institutions regulations.
Qualifying Foster Care Requirement
Qualifying students must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
- Is a former foster child who was in the custody of the Georgia Division Family and Children Services for at least six months after their fourteenth birthday; or
- Currently in custody of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services; or
- Currently participating in the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services independent living program in accordance to the applicable policies and procedures; or
- Was adopted from the permanent legal custody of the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services following the child’s fourteenth birthday; or
- The family is receiving or has previously received state funded adoption services through the Georgia Department of Human Services.
