Governor Kemp Honors 2023 Valedictorians
The Zell Miller Scholarship awards Georgia students who have demonstrated superb academic achievement in high school. These scholars were honored by Governor Brian Kemp and GSFC President Lynne Riley at the annual valedictorian reception in Atlanta on June 3.
“As these gifted students prepare for what the future holds,” said Governor Kemp on his Twitter page. “I urged them to remain here in our great state of opportunity where a job will be waiting.”
Some of the eligible colleges and universities for the Zell Miller Scholarship sent mascots to the Georgia State University (GSU) Convocation Center to assist students and their families to the festivities and take selfies.
After hearing remarks from GSU President M. Brian Blake to close the ceremony, students gathered in the stands for a group shot with the Governor and First Lady Marty Kemp before serving as the background for the Governor’s own selfie.
Nurses Are In Demand Around Georgia
A shortage of nurses continues to worsen with one generation soon seeking retirement without their trained replacements. Recent reports show Georgia with the lowest densities of registered nurses in the nation, a problem affecting rural areas the most.
“I’ve been a nurse 33 years and since COVID it has changed,” said Marie Burdett of East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. “I think as a profession we have to adapt.”
The State of Georgia has adapted with programs to assist with the next generation of medical professionals. The HOPE Career Grant is designed to provide postsecondary financial assistance to students enrolled in approved programs of study within specific industries with available job opening in the state.
Health Science and Practical Nursing are two of the programs where free tuition is available at any school in the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and a high school diploma isn’t required for eligibility to begin classes.

Mascots Celebrate With Top Scholars And GSFC President
The 2023 Governor's Valedictorian Reception showcased the best and brightest high school graduates from across the state of Georgia and some of the mascots their future colleges represent.
The mascots were outside the Georgia State University Convocation Center, helping students and their families inside the recently completed structure in downtown Atlanta.
Once inside, the mascots continued to take pictures with potential incoming students and state representatives on hand for the celebration.
But the celebration wasn't complete until GSFC President Lynne Riley photo bombed the group shot.
